ASEAN, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations
Cambodia to take up the chairmanship of ASEAN in 2012.
Many of ASEAN member states are the worst human and religious rights violators: Vietnam, Myanmar (Burma), Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, and the Philippines. Half of these countries adhere to Buddhism. Yet many of their own citizens live in fear for practicing Buddhism. On paper, there is a separate of state and religion. In practice, the state controls religion.
ASEAN is comprised all of these 10 nations and want to model after the European Union.
Will we ever get there if many or all of the 10 member states violate the rights of their own peoples?
