At the beginning of 2015 we celebrated the graduation of 30 girls from our 10th month Sewing Training School. 25 of the girls have obtained good jobs – better than their previous unskilled or exploitive work situation. 5 other girls wanted to return to their communities to set up small businesses, using the sewing machine and materials that each girl receives on graduation, and we also started opening the 11th month promotion for new young women and girls. Now the 11th promotions have been 5 months running in effective and productive way.
We offer our congratulation and wishes to both the graduates and new coming girls in their new way of life!
In this first semester we completely built four Peace Houses for poor families in the various areas of Siem Reap province which are supported by LHA’s Buddhism in Society Program. At the beginning of July we completely built the 86th house for one poor family living in Romdoul Village, Reol Commune, Pouk District whith generous support from the Feferkranz Family Melbourne, Australia and labor supplied by our monks, villagers and volunteers.
Each house costs $ 2,000 to build and provides housing for the poorest families who previously lived in tiny huts or under lean-to structures with plastic bags or palm leaves for roofing. Peace houses are offered to families who provide loving, secure homes and send their children to school regularly. We tell them that “good things always happen to good people.” And we make sure they do.
At the end of April, we also finished the PAGE library building, including the materials, equipment, 1278 reading books, 10 laptop computers, LCD projector, projector screen and more, funded by the GO Campaign, USA. Through this library we believe that our PAGE students will gain good quality education, improve their learning capacity, and create a behavior of loving books in our young generation. We would like to extent deepest thanks to GO and congratulations to all PAGE girls for the new library as well.
In this semester, our Buddhism in Society Program very effectively hosted the Moral Education for young students, about the basic concepts and philosophy of Buddha’s teaching in different schools and areas of Siem Reap Province, such as; Provincial Teacher Training College, Techor Hun Sen High School, Pouk High School, Bantheay Srie High School, Hun Sen Siem Reap High School, Wat Damnak Primary School, Foreign Language School, and Park Hyatt Siem Reap & LHA Sewing School. The program conducted the parent’s virtue description to the students at Provincial Teacher Training School, aiming to provide mental and physical mentoring as good resources for our nation.
We also provided the Emergency Relief Fund to 12 families who faced difficulties because of storms, fires, and to the poorest in various areas of Siem Reap Province. Four families lived in Khnart Village, Khnart Commune, Pouk District, four families lived in Kokoh Chhrum Village, Khnarsadai Commune, Bantheay Srie District and four other families lived in Kor Kranh Village, Siem Reap District.
Finally, turning to the Sustainable Community Project in this semester, we have seen that a few families who received our support of food delivery and a Micro Loan now are moving on towards a new way of improvement. For example, Chhum Chheas’s family, after borrowing our loan, started his home garden and small business. Now he can earn good money and can buy some more land to expand. This benefits not only the families in the community but also those who stayed in the Children Development Village – his agricultural garden is growing vegetables and herbs and can earn good money to support his family and children’s education.
Next Semester Plans:
Celebrate Inauguration Ceremony for PAGE’s library
Select new girls into PAGE for the academic year 2015 – 2016
Recruit the Sewing Teacher for Park Hyatt Siem Reap & LHA Sewing School
Build 13 peace houses
In conclusion, let me once again thank all the wonderful donors, volunteers, and other supporters who allowed these and so many other great developments to happen. Through your generosity and kindness, the lives of the poorest and most disadvantaged are being transformed every day. For that we owe you our heartfelt thanks.
With peace and love,
Venerable Lorm Loeurm
