After another year of operation in 2015, I would like to share the wonderful achievements of all the projects of Life and Hope Association, again operating to serve our poor and vulnerable children, as well as young women at risk in various communities of Siem Reap Province.
Our goal is always to improve the quality of life and make a change for our disadvantaged people so their life may be better. We are strongly committed to using our energy, knowledge, experiences, and skill to invest in disadvantaged people and help them break the cycle of ignorance and poverty, bringing them a more comfortable environment for poor children, families, and communities.
Sustainable Community Projects (SCP)
At least fifty-five poor families from six villages of Peak Sneng Commune in Angkor Thom District were provided with food every month of the year, and twenty were provided with a microloan to start home businesses as well as home gardening to help improve the family economic situation. Two hundred and fifty school uniforms and study materials are provided to poor children once a year to promote school attendance and education in the rural areas, and monitoring and evaluation of the children and families was regularly conducted by our project coordinator, project coordinator assistant and village volunteers.
As for the result, twenty percent of poor families are getting better because they have a specific job to do there was a reduction in gambling, drinking and domestic violence. Instead, with hard work and ninety-eight percent of children in this community being regularly in school, most of the children are not needed to make money for the families.
Children’s Development Village (CDV)
Currently there are twenty-eight children in the Children Development Village which is located in Leap Village, Peak Sneng Commune, Angkor Thom District about twenty-five kilometers to the north site of Angkor Area. In 2015, we repaired the bottom columns number 3 and house number 4, we installed lengthening protection, built a house cooker, repaired the roof of the kitchen, filled up the land in the garden area, and set up a new program for our children in the center. As a result, our children lived in secure, safe, and healthy, well grow, and all moved forward to new grades in the new academic year 2016.
On a sad note however, one of our dear children died from leukaemia after a short illness and treatment we were able to organise in Thailand.
Program Advancing Girl’s Education (Page)
At the end of the year we saw there were nine PAGE girls who took their national examination for their high school level, the result being six students passed their exams and three failed. One student received a university scholarship from the Royal University of Agriculture in Phnom Penh on an Agriculture Major, one received a university scholarship from Battambang University at Battambang Province on Mathematics Major, another (Las Srey Mao) is working as an Administrative Assistant at our Head Office, and seven other students entered vocation training for the Salabai Organization doing hospitality, housekeeping, cooking and makeup.
The students who studied in grade 10 and 11 all progressed in the new academic year 2016. Beside this, we built a new library building and equipped it with ten computers, an LCD projector and screen, reading tables, chairs, a printer, and more than two thousand books. We started the English and Computer program, conducted self-development programs every Sunday night and received nine new students.
One past student (Noun Vichany) who studied at Royal University of Law and Economics, successfully graduated for her Bachelor Degree in an Economic Major and is now working as an assistant to the CEO of a real estate company in Phnom Penh City.
Park Hyatt Siem Reap & LHA Sewing School (STS)
Looking at Park Hyatt Siem Reap & LHA Sewing School, in 2015, we had the successful operation of our 11th promotion which went from February 2015 until it ended in December 2015, marked by the holding of a graduation celebration. This was attended by Venerable Nal Chhum, Wat Damnak, Leader and the Honorable President of LHA, Mr. Ourn Pov, the Siem Reap City Governor, representative of the Department of Labor and Vocational Training, local authorities, company owners, shop managers, as well as parents and students – a very warm celebration.
We gave each graduate a sewing machine and some sets of clothes as a ceremonial present. The 11th Promotion was very successful because after the end of the promotion, twenty-three students were already employed with good wages, two moved back to their homelands to start a business, and another furthered her vocational skills for her future business.
Buddhism in Society Program (BSP)
In 2015 BSP provided ten young monks the chance to attend administrative and leadership training for Wat Leaders from forty two Wats around Siem Reap City. We built twenty peace houses for poor families in various communities of Siem Reap Province, held moral education at five high schools such as Pouk, Hun Sen Angkor Thom, Banteay Srei, Hun Sen Siem Reap, and Angkor Thom High Schools, with more than twenty thousand students. These were conducted once a month for the first year students at Siem teacher training college, once a week for all students at Wat Damnak Primary School, two times a month for the Foreign Language School, and two times a week at the Sewing Training School.
Finally, we offered emergency relief seven times to families in the most difficult situations.
In other news the Foreign Language School has been returned to the Wat and will not be one of LHA’s projects any more. We are very proud of our achievements with the students and hope that success will continue with the new management.
In conclusion, we have once again served our communities and people, especially poor and vulnerable children, and young women or girls at risk. We help them to step to a new way of life that is better than before by means of compassionate love, care, and the opportunity for education. Thousands of children and women are served by our program and their lives have been totally changed. We are strongly committed to continue our effort and concentrate more and more on serving our communities in the future.
On half of LHA I would like to extend my gratefulness and thankfulness to all donors, sponsors, and friends who have always given us the amazing and generous support to ensure our works continue to help disadvantages people – especially children and women at risk – and to improve their lives with stablilty, peace and happiness. I wish you all success.
With peace and love,
Venerable Lorm Loeurm
