The Buddhist monks and devotees from the 8 New England regional temples, Wat Dhammagosanaram (Cranston, RI), Wat Buddhist Center of New England (Providence, RI), Wat Ratanaraingsey (Revere, MA), Wat Sangkhikaram (Lynn, MA), Wat Buddharaingsey (Worcester, MA), Wat Triratanaram (North Chelmsford, MA) and Wat Ratanaram (Newtown, Connecticut), converged on Wat Dhammikaram on Sunday the 13th Waxing Moon of Magasira B.E.2554, December 19, 2010, Year of the Tiger, to pay their final respect and bid farewell to one of long-time ordained Buddhist monks, Ven. Nikamadhammo Mey Ros, abbot of Wat Dhammikaram, Providence, Rhode Island United States of America.

This past Sunday event is presided by the Most Venerable Siripanno Thon Sophon, president of the International Community of Khmer Buddhist Monks Center of Pelham and abbot of Wat Sangkhikaram, Lynn, Massachusetts United States of America.

Before procession the Body of Ven. Nikamadhammo Mey Ros to be cremated at the West Warwick-based Carpenter-Jenks Funeral Home, temple’s board president John Chea opened the speaking ceremony by telling a brief history of the temple.

Ven. Pannabotto Pen Thol read a brief biography of Ven. Nikamadhammo Mey Ros.

Local SRP-RI/Fall River delegate, the Sam Rainsy Party of Rhode Island/Fall River, also attended the service at the temple and the cremating ceremony.

Speakers: Rhode Island State Representative Scott Slater (District 10), Providence City Councilman John J. Lombardi (Ward 13), and the Cambodian Society of Rhode Island president Sarin Rath.

The Most Venerable Dhammathero Sao Khon, president of the Community of Khmer Buddhist Monks Center of the United States of America, abbot of Wat Triratanaram, former president of the International Community of Khmer Buddhist Monks Center of Pelham (formerly led by the late H.H. Samdech Dr. Maha Ghosananda), and Upajaya (Buddhist Master) of the late Ven. Nikamadhammo, along with Buddhist monks and devotees from His temple paid their final respect on Friday Dec. 17. The Maha Thera Ven. Dhammathero Sao Khon could not attend the service to the end because he had to also attend another funeral service of the late laypeople's leader of Wat Sao Soksan in South Carolina on the same weekend.

Some former presidents, Taing Nam Meng, Sam Sokvann, Keo Samnang, Prak Lavong (Acting president), Ms. Molly Soum, Im Sophon, Chhouk Savan, former CSRI Executive Director Sip Chhem, of the local based non-profit Cambodian Society of RI were in attendance.

Wat Uddom Saharatanaram of Fall River, Massachusetts, Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline and Mayor-elect Angel Taveras had paid their respect in the previous days.

Wat Dhammikaram is the first established Khmer Buddhist temple in the United States of America helped established by the late His Holiness Samdech Dr. Maha Ghosananda, Supreme Buddhist Patriarch of Cambodia, also the first abbot of the temple.

The late Ven. Kim Phorn is the second abbot of the temple and the late Ven. Nikom Dhammo is the third abbot.

The late Mr. Pok Som Im, age 80, native of Cambodia, 1930 - Friday August 13, B.E.2554, A.D.2010 Year of the Tiger, former Cambodian Navy Colonel, passed away at morning hour 3 and 45 minutes due to illness at the Country Villa Seal Beach, California, United States of America.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Din Sotthy, children and grand children.

Brief biography

Mr. Saukam was born in Cambodia on February 2, 1915 to the parents of Kam Siv and Uy Sinn Loeung. When Mr. Saukam was 25 years old, he enlisted in the Royal Khmer Army. Mr. Saukam served in the Cambodian Military for 35 years. In 1953, Mr. Saukam achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel, and then went on to become Lt. General. Mr. Saukam served as President of the Senate of the Khmer Republic in 1972. From April 1 to April 12, 1975, Mr. Saukam served as acting President of the Khmer Republic.

In 1975, Mr. Saukam moved his family to the United States, where he originally settled in Houston, Texas. Then, in 1984, he moved to Stockton where he has resided for the past 24 years.

Mr. Saukam is survived by his children Bopharin Saukam of France, Vanan Saukam, Vanchan Saukam, and Vanrith Saukam all of Houston, Texas, Sophala Saukam of France, and Bophasy Saukam of Stockton. Mr. Saukam is also survived by 21 grandchildren, three of whom live in Stockton, Sytana Dany Khloth, Bonaka Dean Khloth and Boramy Tina Khloth. Mr. Saukam is preceded in death by his wife Mrs. Vom Tep Saukam, his son Vanroeun Saukam, his daughter-in-laws Chantharin Saukam and Bunthoeun Saukam, his parents Kam Siv and Uy Sinn Loeung, and 2 siblings.

“It is with great sadness that I tell you Munty Pot passed away on Saturday morning. He had complications from a previous medical condition. Munty was a sub-contractor working with me at the Senior Center on two grant funded projects. Munty was well known in the Cambodian Community. He was 42, has a 9 year old son and his wife is expecting their second child. He was instrumental in helping me with his role with Lowell Seniors Count and in assisting our Cambodian Elders. He was a good friend, a fine man and a leader in the Cambodian Community.” Lynne Brown-Zones, Executive Director, Lowell Senior Center

Mr. Munty Pot passed away on Saturday September 6, 2008 at around 8:00 AM at Lowell General Hospital, Massachusetts United States due to medical complication, an aneurism. His abruptly passing away is the tremendous loss to his surviving family members including his wife, Sophy Diep, who is 7-month pregnant with their second child, his 9-year old son, Phoenix Pot, and members of his immediate families, including his father, brothers and sisters. Both his wife and his son along with an unborn child will be facing tremendous difficulties with this lost of a husband, a father, and a breadwinner.

A family Memorial fund is being set up at the Enterprise Bank to help his family, his wife, his son and the unborn baby to cope with financial challenges and uncertain future. read more
