When can royal terms be properly used for the Buddhist monks in addition to the King, Queen, Emperor, His Royal Highness, or Her Royal Highness?
Royal terms properly use for the Sangharaja (the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch). For example, His Holiness Suvannakesaro (Birthname Nil Teang), His Holiness Samdech the Great Dr. Jotañāṇo (Birthname Chuon Nath), His Holiness Samdech Vajirapanno (Birthname Huot Tath), His Holiness Samdech Dr. Maha Ghosananda (H.H. Maha Ghosananda never used his birthname once he’d been ordained as a Bhikkhu; according to the teachings of the Buddha, once a male individual leaves the household life, he is ordained as a bhikkhu, he no longer is known by his birthname. He would take up an ordained name given by his preceptor (Teacher who ordains him). Buddhist monks (a sāmaṇera or a bhikkhu) no matter how many years, he has been ordained or has been a monk, we must not address him in verbal, oral, writing, or printing as His Holiness; properly we address him as a sāmaṇera or a bhikkhu, venerable (Ven. in short), or bhante.
Please be reminded, for Buddhist monks we as a Bhikkhu, a Samanera, or layperson must not address another monk (whether a bhikkhu or samanera) in royal terms in speaking toward, speaking with, speaking at, in writing, and printing.
